J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Project Integration and Schedule 280m detector hall will not be fully available until February 2009, producing a severe challenge for the installation of the 280m detectors. As recommended by the PAC, we have formed an Integration Group of the detector engineers, organized by Alan Grant and Cormac Neeson, to do detailed planning of the detector installation. Meeting planned for July 10/11 at Imperial, 19 engineers will be in attendance.

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Project Integration and Schedule

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Project Integration and Schedule Obviously such an integration programme is complex and interconnected (and something could slip), however… Previously all installation was scheduled for Feb- March, now just the INGRID For beam commissioning only the INGRID and muon monitors are really needed, and these have few linkages to the other detectors. The neutrino spectrum can me measured with just the magnet, FGDs, and TPCs. We should therefore be able to make efficient use of the beam from day one.

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark IAC07 T2K Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Other Progress and Issues The T2K Collaboration has adopted an International Collaboration Agreement. This replaces the provisional governing structure of the collaboration with a governing arrangement fairly typical of international HEP projects: –Spokesman and International Co-Spokesman –Executive Committee and Institutional Board –Publication policy –Speakers bureau… We are forming new Working Groups for T2K-SK analysis and Global Analysis

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Canada –Contributions: All the FGD except photosensors TPC mechanical and field cage, integration, gas system Slow Controls and Monitoring Cont. to Beamline: OTR Monitor, Remote handling for hot cell, beam position/profile monitors and vessel –Funding situation: secured with yearly review France –Contributions: INGRID detector (LLR) TPC Micromegas and FE electronics (Dapnia) TPC BE electronics (LPNHE) Beamline quench detection system Power supply for the UA1 magnet –Funding situation: secured. Contributions and Funding by Country

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Germany –Contributions: UA1 Magnet moving system TPC gas monitoring –Funding situation: request submitted. Italy –Contributions : UA1 Magnet preparation TPC elements? –Very uncertain… Japan –Contributions: J-PARC Most of SK, and the SK rebuild and upgrades Most of the T2K beamline, target, and beam dump including beamline monitors and muon monitor Infrastructure for the 280m facility INGRID detector FGD photosensors SMRD FEE Cont. to NA61 –Funding situation: secured, with additional funding from MEXT in form of competitive grants. Contributions and Funding by Country

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Contributions and Funding by Country Poland –Contributions: Cont. to SMRD Cont. to NA61 –Funding situation: request submitted Russia –Contributions: Cont. to SMRD –Funding situation: secured South Korea –Contributions: Beamline proton monitor electronics –Funding situation: secured Spain –Contributions: TPC testing, calibration, and gas monitoring Cont. to UA1 magnet –Funding situation: secured Switzerland –Contributions: Cont. to TPC mechanics, testing, and assembly Major contributions to NA61 Major Cont. to UA1 magnet –Funding situation: secured subject to annual review

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark United Kingdom –Contributions: BEE for ECAL/P0D /SMRD/INGRID Cont. to beamline - beam window, baffle, and engineering for target and dump design, target remote handling Basket/basket stand ECAL (all) FEE design for P0D/SMRD/INGRID DAQ for 280m Cont. to UA1 magnet –Funding situation: ~60% secured, funding for the Barrel and P0D ECALs deferred for decision this year. United States –Contributions: Cont. to SK, including upgrades, rebuild, and new SK electronics P0D (all) Beamline - SC corrector magnets, 2nd horn, monitor electronics and GPS Cont. to SMRD –Funding situation: secured, with forward cash flow from institutions(!) Contributions and Funding by Country

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Overall funding situation… Mostly good. The only major uncertainty for committed items is the UK funding for the ECAL, which we should find out later this year. However: –There is no overall cash reserve or contingency for the project. –A number of items have been identified which fall in the cracks between commitments, the most notable of which is the magnet installation (precise cost estimates are not yet available for some of these items).

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Overall funding situation… Mostly good. However: –There is no overall cash reserve or contingency for the project. –A number of items have been identified which fall in the cracks between commitments, the most notable of which is the magnet installation (precise cost estimates are not yet available for some of these items). –We tried to cover this by extending the operating Common Fund forward two years into the construction period. –This has not been immediately accepted by all funding agencies, and we are negotiating. –The total amount is small compared to the project cost, but the last bit is always hardest to find…

J-PARC PAC ‘07 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Overall funding situation… The situation with the final funding for completion should properly be the remit for an International Finance Committee made up of representatives from the funding bodies. We would welcome help from KEK in rapidly forming such a committee to help us finalize funding arrangements for installation and integration.
