In Your Own Words… PARAPHRASING

By the End, You will Know… oHow to put a passage in your own words without changing the meaning oThe definition of Paraphrasing oThe difference between a paraphrase and a summary.

What is Paraphrasing??? oPARAPHRASING IS… oA detailed restatement in your own words oUsed to clarify meaning oCan be used to shorten a longer statement, but keeps the main ideas

So How Do We Do It?  Read the passage carefully  Decide what are the main ideas  Highlight important words / phrases  Put the main points in your own words PARAPHRASE ME!

Example 1 Passage from Book He was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, Murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.. a brood forever opposing the Lord’s will 1 st – Circle all the words you do not know or would not use.

All of the highlighted words/phrases need a replacement ORIGINAL PASSAGE ·He was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, Murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.. a brood forever opposing the Lord’s will HIGHLIGHTED PASSAGE ·He was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, Murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.. a brood forever opposing the Lord’s will

But wait!!! You just can’t switch words around. (It still won’t sound like you) Does this sound like you? He was produced in that slime. Originated by a pair of those Monsters from the bible story Cain and Abel. Murderous animals exiled by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.. Offspring always opposing God’s orders

Use these tips to help you take the next step to paraphrase correctly Have you ever had to translate for someone else? You don’t translate every word do you? Paraphrasing is kind of like explaining to your ten year old sister, brother, cousin Remember it has to have the same meaning when your done.

The difference between a paraphrase and a summary ·To paraphrase means to express someone else’s ideas in your own language. · To summarize means to put down only the most essential points of someone else’s work. ·Think about how much detail from your source is relevant. If all your reader needs to know is the “bare bones”, then summarize

The Difference Between Paraphrasing and Summarizing To paraphrase means to express someone else's ideas in your own language. To summarize means to put down only the most essential points of someone else's work. Think about how much of the detail from your source is relevant. If all your reader needs to know is the ‘bare bones’, then summarize.

Let’s try it again. First circle words you don’t use/ know ORIGINAL PASSAGE ·He was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, Murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.. a brood forever opposing the Lord’s will HIGHLIGHTED WORDS He was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, Murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.. a brood forever opposing the Lord’s will

Your paraphrase MY PARAPHRASE ??? ORIGINAL PASSAGE ·He was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, Murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.. a brood forever opposing the Lord’s will
