Bell Work "You have been told, O man what is good and what Yahweh asks of you, simply this: to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8 – What does this quote mean to you?

Social Justice: What is it?

Social Justice-The respect for the human person & the rights which flow from human dignity and guarantee it. – Society must provide the conditions that allow people to obtain what is theirs, according to their nature and vocation.

7 Themes of Social Justice Life & Dignity of the human person Call to Family, Community, & Participation Rights & Responsibilities Option for the Poor & Vulnerable The Dignity of Work & the Rights of Workers Solidarity Care for God’s Creation

Bell Work What were the 7 Themes of Social Justice that we briefly discussed yesterday?

7 Themes of Social Justice Life & Dignity of the human person Call to Family, Community, & Participation Rights & Responsibilities Option for the Poor & Vulnerable The Dignity of Work & the Rights of Workers Solidarity Care for God’s Creation

Life & Dignity of the human person – Human life is sacred & the self-esteem of the human person is the foundation of a decent vision for society. – This belief is the foundation of all the principles of our social teaching.

Call to Family, Community, & Participation – How we organize our society Ex. in economics & politics laws & policies directly affects human self- esteem & the ability to grow in a community. – We believe people have a right & a duty to participate in society

Bell Work What are 2 examples of issues that deal with Life & Dignity of the human person? What is one way you can participate in your community?

Rights & Responsibilities – Human self-esteem & a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected & responsibilities are met. – Everyone has the right to life

Option for the Poor & Vulnerable – Put the needs of the poor & vulnerable first, even though we have a gap between the rich & the poor

The Dignity of Work & the Rights of Workers – Work is more than just making a living, it’s a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. – If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected

Solidarity – We are 1 human family whatever our economic, ethnic, ideological, national, & racial differences. – We are our the keepers of our brothers & sisters, wherever they may be. – Loving our neighbor has global proportions in a shrinking world.

Bell Work List 2 rights & responsibilities that you have as being a human being in the Catholic church. How could solidarity be shown in the world or how can you show solidarity?

Care for God’s Creation – Care for the earth – Completing stewardship activities

Now that you have learned a little bit You will create an electronic poster on one of the 7 Themes of Social Justice. – Life & Dignity of the human person- 1 person – Call to Family, Community, & Participation- 2 ppl. – Rights & Responsibilities- 1 person – Option for the Poor & Vulnerable- 1 person – The Dignity of Work & the Rights of Workers- 1 person – Solidarity- 1 person – Care for God’s Creation- 1 person

More about your poster You are expected to add pictures, words, examples, & the definition to explain what your theme of social justice is.

Now that you have created a poster I want you to look up real world examples of how people succeed in following each of the 7 Themes of Social Justice. Next seeing how real people in the world succeed I want you to create a superhero that succeeds in every Theme of Social Justice – You will need to come up with a name for your superhero – You will need to come up with superpowers for how your superhero will succeed in all of the themes Ex. How would a superhero help care for the earth?
