3 Review  What did the Israelites lose when conquered by the Babylonians? Land, freedom, and religious and cultural identity  When did the prophet Jeremiah live? During the fall of Jerusalem(627 – 586)  Why did he complain to God? Because he was not idolatrous, but was still suffering like those who were  How did God respond to his complaints? A new kind of covenant: God’s teaching will be written on their hearts

4 Introduction to CST:  Flash Mob! Flash Mob!  A flash mob (or flashmob) is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and artistic expression.

5 Questions:  What is a “social” teaching?  What is a Catholic – Social – Teaching?  Where did the CST’s come from? And naturally, whatever do they have to do with a flash mob??!  What does it require?  What are the CST’s?

6 What is a “social” teaching?  Social- Of or relating to society or its organization ○ a social structure Of or relating to rank and status in society ○ a social class Needing companionship and therefore best suited to living in communities ○ we are social beings Relating to or designed for activities in which people meet each other for pleasure ○ Girl, how’s your social life? (of a bird) breeding or nesting in colonies (of an insect) Living together in organized communities, typically with different castes, as ants, bees, wasps, and termites do (of a mammal) Living together in groups, typically in a hierarchical system with complex communication

7 CST: What is it? 1. Catholic Developed within the Catholic tradition 2. Social Concerned with the structure of society and all of those involved within those structures, both persons and non-persons 3. Teaching Significant principles that need to be shared with others.

8 Where did it come from?  ROOTS: Hebrew Prophets Announced God's special love for the poor and called God's people to a covenant of love and justice  THEOLOGY: Trinity Trinity- 3 persons in one God ○ Creator God, Jesus the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit ○ Dancing together God’s nature is communal and social  ANTHROPOLOGY: The Creation Narratives People made in God’s image We share God’s communal, social nature We are invited into God’s eternal dance! ○ (Flash mob)

9 What does it require?  CARE Responsibility to care for self, others, & environment  COMMITMENT Perseverance in times of struggle  CONVERSION Constantly living the mystery of God as it is revealed to you!

10 What are the CST?  Count off by 7  Organize into your groups  Read the CST that you are given to your group.  Discuss and write down: What contemporary events or things threaten the realization of your teaching in the world? Which prophets support this CST in their words and lives? How? What are some ways that we and others can live these values and teach them to the world?  Present to class! Wait until the class writes down the CST from PowerPoint Read your CST. Present your answers to the questions. Everyone in the group must participate!

14 #4: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable  We must put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first

15 #5: The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers  Basic rights of workers must be respected

16 #6: Solidarity  We are one human family and must act like it

17 #7: Care for God's Creation  We are stewards of our environment.

18 Conclusion  Let’s be a flash mob to spread love, compassion, justice, and dignity throughout the world! Let’s creatively and effectively organize ourselves Let’s allow everyone to join God’s dance and experience the ideal vision of the prophets throughout their lives!
