Three Major Promises God’s Covenant with Abraham –In his seed all nations shall be blessed God’s Covenant with the Nation Israel –If they faithfully served Him they’d prosper Holy Nation, Kingdom of priests –If they forsook Him they would be destroyed God’s Covenant with David –His family would produce the Messiah who would reign over God’s people forever

Bible Timeline Creation Fall of Man Flood Abraham The Exodus David Christ Israel Restored The Nation Israel The Diaspora Exile Genesis Rest of OT NT 6,000 Years? 400 yrs The Exodus David 1000 The Conquest of Canaan The Wanderings

The Book of Exodus (The “Outgoing”) - God calls a nation to become His Kingdom and moves in with them. - How can God’s presence dwell among a nation of wicked revolutionaries? But not quite right. -Better, how can sinful rebels bear the presence of the holy Creator? They can not. That is the problem.

Three Main Sections The Exodus Chapters –The Plagues –The Passover –The Crossing of the Red Sea The Law Chapters –The Mosaic Covenant The Tabernacle Chapters –God coming to his people

The Exodus - Background Problem was Israel was getting too big, blessing of being fruitful and multiplying. This caused Egyptian oppression, killing the babies Salvation comes from God remembering his promise to Abraham. Ex. 2: God’s faithfulness, righteousness.

Moses Most significant person from the Old Testament Starts as a failure, not qualified to be the deliverer He took a race of slaves and molded them into a powerful nation that altered the entire course of history

The Battle God vs. Pharoah Pharaoh is God’s play thing –3:19 – God compels Pharaoh –4:21 – God hardens Pharaoh’s heart Reason for the plagues, not to bring deliverance –8:22, 9:15, 16 God to be known

Ten Plagues “…against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment…” Water turned to blood Osiris, Isis, Horus, Hapimon,Tauret, Nu Frogs Hekt Lice Geb Swarms Amon-Ra Plagues on cattle Apis, Hathor, Bubastis Boils Thoth, Apis, Serapis, Imhotep Hail Shu, Nut, Horus Locusts Nepri, Ermutet, Anupis, Osiris Darkness Ra, Aten, Horus, Tem, Shu Firstborn Pharaoh’s own dynasty Exodus 12:12

Mt. Sinai God’s glory descended on the mountain and gave Ten Commandments. God’s words terrified Israelites. Begged Moses to be the mediator. He becomes a prophet for next 40 years, pleading with God to have mercy on his people. Why was Israel redeemed? 19:5-6 –Holy – gift of the law –To be priests – to all nations, to be light When they fail, God becomes a laughing stock

1 Peter 2: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

The Law Commandments(Moral) Chapters –The Terms –The Parties –The Altar The “Judgments”(Social) Chapters –Rights and practices The Ordnances(Religious) Chapters –Sabbaths and Feasts

The Ten Commandments Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not worship any graven image. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy. Honor thy father and thy mother. Thou shalt not murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness. Thou shalt not covet.

The Tabernacle “The Dwelling Place” –Along with Ten Commandments, Moses receives instructions on the dwelling for God’s glory among the people. »Instructions are 7 chapters, building is 6 chapters. »Not just a meeting place to meet God, but God’s dwelling place, heaven on earth »Recreation, getting back what was lost »How do you explain God's holiness? »In the middle is the great rebellion. »rebellion is contrasted to God's holiness

The Tabernacle Instructions Golden Calf 32 Building 35-40

The Tabernacle –The biggest problem is not Pharaoh’s stubbornness but of the chosen people. If Pharaoh got judged, how can Israel avoid it? –God wants to wipe them out. Moses speaks 32:12-14 »Strength of his promise is tested. »God’s character is revealed. He forgives. »Why was Pharaoh judged and not Israelites? That’s hidden. 34:6

Tabernacle Glory of God filled the tent. –Beginning of the book, Egypt was filled with Israelites. Now the dwelling is filled with the glory of God, not even Moses can stand it. –How can God’s presence dwell among the people? Only through grace and forgiveness. »He did not relax his standards but forgave them in light of the power of his word to the Hebrew ancestors.
