2. Judaism Religion of the Israelites. It was Monotheistic – one god.
Prophets – messengers of God who shared God’s word with the people.
Their God created the earth and everything in it.
Their God is all powerful and all knowing.
God expected goodness from his people.
Could have a personally relationship with God.

3. Hebrew Bible - Torah First 5 books of the Bible.
Recorded the beliefs and faith of the Israelites.
Two other major religions develop from Judaism – Islam and Christianity.
Christianity calls the Hebrew Bible the Old Testament. Islam also excepts many of Judaism’s beliefs

4. Abraham Considered the Father of the Israelites.
Was a herder and trader.
Migrated from Mesopotamia to Canaan (Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan)
This land is called the promised land – God promised it to Abraham and his descendents.

5. 12 Tribes of Israel Abraham’s grandson Jacob would lead the Hebrews.
Jacob had 12 sons that would later be the 12 tribes of Israel.
Jacob’s son Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt. He would go on to become the 2nd most powerful man after the Pharaoh.
He was in charge of storing food for a famine that was on the way.

6. Jacob and his 11 sons migrated to Egypt to escape the famine.
The Israelites lived in peace for several generations.
Eventually the Pharaoh became afraid of the Israelites size (population).
He placed them in slavery.
The Israelites prayed to God to set them free.

7. When Moses was born he placed in a basket and floated down the Nile.
The Egyptian princess found him and adopted him as her own.
Later in life Moses discovered that he was truly an Israelite.
After killing an Egyptian he was stripped of his royalty and banished from Egypt.

8. Moses Moses became a sheep herder.
One day he came across a burning bush with the voice of God.
God told Moses that he was to return to Egypt to lead his people out.
Moses advised Ramses that he wants to take the Israelites out of Egypt.
Ramses refuses to allow them to leave.

9. According to the Israelite bible, God unleashes 7 plagues onto Egypt.
The last plague takes the life of every first born male child in Egypt.
The Israelites are told to place lambs blood over their doors so that their children won’t die.
Ramses son is killed. He allows the Israelites to leave Egypt.

10. Locust plague

11. Moses and the Exodus Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt.
When Moses reaches the Red Sea he reaches out his staff and parts the sea.
The Israelites walk on dry land to the other side of the Red Sea.

12. Meanwhile Ramses changes his mind and sends his army after the Israelites.
Moses takes his staff away and the Red Sea crashes down on the Egyptian army.

13. Moses and the 40 year wandering
Moses leads the Israelites to a place called Canaan.
On the way God makes a covenant with the Israelites that if they worship him, he would give them the land of Canaan.
Along the way, the Israelites make a idol to worship instead of God.
God punishes the adults by making them wander the land for 40 years until they die. They never enter the land of Canaan.

14. 10 laws or principles given by God to help guide the Israelites social behaviors.
These ten laws were given to Moses on tablets which he then gave to the people.
They instructed that they needed to be loyal to God and also teach moral principles.

15. The Ten Commandments 1. You shall have no other gods but me.
2.     You shall not make unto you any graven images
3.     You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
4.     You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
5.     Honor your mother and father
6.     You shall not murder
7.     You shall not commit adultery
8.     You shall not steal
9.     You shall not bear false witness
10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor
We get some of our laws from these commandments.

16. People groups living in Canaan were the Phoenicians and the Philistines.
In order for the Israelites to live in Canaan they need to displace these people.
The Israelites will go to war with them to setup their own towns.

17. Phoenicians They were skilled sailors and traders.
Lived close to the Mediterranean Sea.
Known for their purple dye. It was extracted from snails. Purple was reserved for Royalty.
Also known for their creation of an alphabet.

18. Philistines Migrated from Greece to the Mediterranean Sea.
Created 5 fortified walled cities in Canaan.
Had Iron weapons.
Were the strongest army in Canaan.

19. Joshua The new leader of the Israelites after the death of Moses.
Known for the battle at Jericho.
According to their bible, God told them to walk around the walls of Jericho. On the seventh day they let out a loud shout and the walls fell down. They took the city.
Any land they took way divided among the 12 tribes.

20. The Tabernacle Israelites worshipped God in a Tabernacle.
They believed that it housed god’s presence.
It would be taken down every time they moved to another place.
The ark of the covenant was housed in the Tabernacle.
It was a golden chest that housed the Ten Commandments.
