NHS & DH Strategy Patient & Public Engagement Service User Involvement in: decisions about treatments, choices & priorities research partnerships, i.e., the design, conduct, analysis & reporting of research

Antimicrobial Resistance & Healthcare-associated Infections priority field for research Prevalence of HCAI in England (2006) –8.2 % of patients Associated with increased: –morbidity and mortality –Length of hospitalisation –Costs –Antimicrobial resistance –Consumer dissatisfaction

Antimicrobial Resistance & Healthcare-associated Infections Clinical insights into developing research priorities, strategies and design need to be influenced by service user perspectives Access to service users insights not generally available in this field

Service Users Research Forum (SURF) Identify users concerns in a systematic way Provide interface for service users and researchers Develop knowledge & skills of service users & professionals to effectively collaborate in research activities

Today’s Workshop Share experiences and explore your potential involvement in research Discuss the training opportunities of SURF participation Contribute to the generation of new knowledge which can be used to protect patients from infections
