Chromosomes Humans have 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes One inherited from your mother, the other from your father All but one of these pairs consists of autosomes, or chromosomes that contain genes for characteristics not directly related to sex The last pair is a sex chromosome and it directly controls the development of sexual charateristics
