هي مناسبة سنوية تم فيها التوقيع على معاهدة الأراضي الرطبة في مدينة رامسر، وتحتفل بهذه المناسبة المنظمات الحكومية وغير الحكومية، والمواطنون في كل أنحاء العالم. وتهدف المناسبة إلى حماية الأراضي الرطبة والاستخدام الحكيم لمواردها، من خلال الفعاليات المحلية والإقليمية والوطنية بالإضافة إلى التعاون الدولي لزيادة الوعي بأهمية الأراضي الرطبة و فوائدها بشكل عام. شعار المناسبة لهذا العام ” من المنبع إلى المصب - الأراضي الرطبة تربطنا جميعاً ” وذلك لرفع مستوى الوعي لدى أفراد المجتمع حول دور نشاطات الإنسان وتأثيرها على مجرى القنوات المائية، و لإبراز التحديات التي تواجهها الإدارة البيئية في ضوء التنمية المستدامة. تعتبر دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة العضو رقم ( 156 ) بانضمام محمية رأس الخور للحياة الفطرية إلى معاهدة رامسر في أغسطس 2007 ، وتعتبر المحمية الموقع رقم ( 1715 ) ضمن المواقع الأخرى في العالم والمنضمة للمعاهدة. وفي الوقت الحالي يوجد هنالك ( 1827 ) موقعاً في العالم مصنفاً ضمن معاهدة رامسر، وتغطي هذه المواقع مساحة وقدرها ( 200 ) مليون هكتار من الأراضي.

It marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar. Each year, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens all over the world observe this historic milestone aimed in the conservation and wise use of all wetlands and their resources through local, regional and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world. This day, all efforts are geared towards raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general. The theme for this year's celebration – "UPSTREAM – DOWNSTREAM, Wetlands Connect Us All” demonstrates the significance of wetlands and its interconnections with the environment around it. This year's celebration highlights the raising of awareness to all people about their river basins and the consequence of human activities whether it impacts on the downstream or upstream environment. And the core concern for World Wetlands Day 2009 will focus on how to address the challenges of good management of the environment in the quest for sustainable development. United Arab Emirates is the 156th member of the RAMSAR Convention and the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is the 1715th RAMSAR site around the Globe. As of December 2008, there are 1,827 RAMSAR sites covering more than 200 million of hectares of surface area worldwide WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2009
