Mass, color, volume, and weight are examples of physical properties. A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the substance. Example:
(2.3) Chemical Reaction Evidence (p ). Chemical Reaction In a chemical reaction new substances are always formed. Can you identify a chemical reaction.
Chemical Reaction Notes. Matter is everything around you. Matter is anything made of atoms and molecules. Matter is anything that has a mass.
Evidence of Chemical Reactions Temperature Change Heat is absorbed by the substances causing the temperature to decrease Heat is released by the substances.

Section 1 Forming New Substances Chapter 14 Section 1 Forming New Substances

Chemical Reactions Chemical Reaction- one/+ things change to produce one/+ new things with new properties

Signs of Chemical Reactions Gas formation bubbles Energy change Light, heat, electricity Solid formation Precipitate- solid in solution Color change Bleach, leaves * These are not always present….sometimes they are not visible

Change in Properties Signs do not guarantee that a chemical reaction is happening Example: boiling water Change in properties is the only way to be sure that a chemical reaction has occurred!!

Breaking and Making Bonds Bonds of starting thing must break Movement and energy Atoms rearrange New bonds form **new bonds= new properties
