Packaging and Shipping Dried Blood Spot Samples (Cold Shipment)

Steps for shipping DBS samples Once blood has been applied to filter paper, allow it to dry at room temperature for at least 3-4 hours in a horizontal position. Avoid touching the blood spot. Drying time may take longer if the humidity is high. Avoid exposing spots to high temperatures and direct sunlight.

Steps for shipping DBS samples Dry blood spots should be completely dry before packing. Stack dried blood spot cards above and below with weighing paper.

Steps for shipping DBS samples Assemble all shipping materials including low gas permeable bag, indicator cards, and desiccant packs. Keep humidity-sensitive materials sealed in containers until needed.

Steps for shipping DBS samples Handle humidity-sensitive materials, such as cards and desiccant packs, with gloves.

Steps for shipping DBS samples Pack dry blood spots in 3-mil thick low gas permeable bags that provide a barrier to gases and water vapor, such as those made of Saranex®. Regular Ziplock or freezer bags should not be used. Add desiccant packs and humidity-indicator card. Zip the bags to seal. Keep as cool as possible during transport.

Steps for shipping DBS samples Pack low gas permeable bag into Tyvek® envelope. Seal the Tyvek® envelope.

Steps for shipping DBS samples Place sealed envelope into box with cold packs. Ship to appropriate laboratory.
