Question 1 What are 2 types of weathering?

Question 2 How can you speed up weathering rates?

Question 3 What is the distance to the epicenter if the P-wave arrived at 12:03:00 and the S-wave arrived at 12:05:30.

Question 4 What is the latitude and longitude of the canary Island hot spot?

Answers Two types of weathering –Chemical and Physical How can you speed up weathering –Increase surface area S-P time = 00:02:30 –1500 Km Latitude and longitude of the Canary Island hotspot –35 oN 20 oW

Soil Is it Dirt or Soil???

Vocab Dirt Soil Residual Soil Transported soil

How does soil form? Rocks -> smaller particles -> tiny particles(Dirt) -> Weathering and organic remains make Soil. Dirt is tiny particles of rock that has been weathered. Soil is dirt with organics in it.

Soil Info The longer the rocks are exposed the more soil is made... It takes hundreds of years to make fertile soil. Rock is broken down and made into soil, sometimes it does transport into a new area and make new soil there. (River delta)

Residual or Transported Residual soils have formed in place and not been moved far from where it has been broken down and weathered. Transported has been moved from one area to another.

Protecting our soil In order to protect our soil we need to understand how it is made. More plants means more soil. The water will carry away the soil. Save the trees!

WHY? Not?

Soil or Dirt Dirt Lighter in color Lacking minerals Small un-weather rocks Fresh or recent dead things in it. Soil Dark colored Rich in minerals No rocks Dead and decaying things in it. Dirt Soil

Questions How is soil created from rock? A.Physical Weathering without chemical weathering B.Chemical weathering without physical weathering C.Erosion without weathering D.Weathering without erosion –D–D WHY???

Question The composition of soil that has formed in place is mostly by the local A.Agent of erosion B.Age of the bedrock C.Slope of the land D.Bedrock composition –D–D WHY?
