8 The layer of soil just below the uppermost layer of soil
Subsoil Topsoil bedrock

9 The uppermost layer of soil. This contains the most hummus.
a. topsoil Subsoil bedrock

10 A large mass of slow moving ice that flows down a slope
Bedrock Fossil glacier

11 The slow breaking or wearing away of rock into smaller pieces
Fossil Weathering bedrock

12 Name 4 things that cause weathering.

13 Remember that soil is made up of bits of rock, (sand), minerals, and materials of once living things. Humus is made up of dead plants and animals. This is the fertile stuff that helps plants grow. It is dark brown in color.

14 There are 4 types of soil. Clay Sand Silt Loam

15 Clay is made up of small particles that pack tightly together
Clay is made up of small particles that pack tightly together. When wet it is sticky and smooth.

16 Sand is made up of coarse particles or grains
Sand is made up of coarse particles or grains. It is very gritty and water flows through easily.

17 Silt is soft and smooth. It is made up of smaller particles of sand.

18 Loam is sticky and smooth
Loam is sticky and smooth. The darker the color the more humus it contains. It is a type of dirt that farmers use to grow crops.

19 What are fossils? Fossils are found in rocks. They help us learn about the past. They give us clues about the environment of that time period. There are different types of fossils. Molds, casts, petrified fossils, amber

20 Molds

21 Casts

22 Petrified fossils form when an organism dies and it gradually disappears.

23 Amber is a tree resin.
