DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Human physiology

 Food you eat is changed into energy  Digestion – the process of breaking down food into molecules that your cells can absorb EATING FOR LIFE

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM  1 st step: taking a bite of food and chewing – breaks down food into smaller pieces Enzymes break food down further (from salivary glands) Enzymes – body chemical  2 nd step: swallowing food down esophagus – tube leading from your throat to stomach Involuntary muscles help push food down to stomach

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM  3 rd step: stomach Involuntary muscles to “mush” up food Enzymes to break down food even more  4 th step: small intestine Food molecules pass through walls of small intestine and into your blood Food molecules spread out throughout body  5 th step: large intestine Solid waste (parts of food that cannot be broken down) called feces, flow from small intestine into large intestine Feces pass out of body through anus – opening below large intestine

EXIT SLIP 1.What gives your body the energy it needs? 2.What are three ways that food is broken down? 3. List the parts of the digestive system By chewing, the use of enzymes, and involuntary muscles food Mouth, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, liver, spleen, salivary glands, tongue, pancreaus
