Habitat Lemon Sharks are found in New Jersey to southern Brazil in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. They also live off the coast of west Africa in the southeastern Atlantic. They’re found in coral reefs, mangroves, enclosed bays, and river mouths. However, lemon sharks have also been found in the open ocean down to depths of 92 meters.

Adaptations The lemon shark has fins and a streamlined body that help it swim through water. It has gills, which take in oxygen directly out of the water. Sharks can stay underwater because of their gills and not have to come to the surface to breathe.

Diet Lemon Sharks feed on crustaceans and shrimp, worms and snails. Many sharks (like the great white, blue shark, mako, tiger shark, and hammer head)are swift, sleek predators that eat fish, squid, other sharks, and marine mammals (like sea lions, seals, and smaller whales).

Tidbits Lemon Sharks is part of the Carcharhinidae. Sharks can be fussy eaters. Sometimes they will take a bite out of their prey or just sink their teeth in to get a taste before they start really feeding. If they don’t like the taste, they spit it out and move.

Life Cycle Lemon Shark’s young are known as pups and stay in shallow water for several years. Fertilization is internal and occurs after a male lemon shark holds a female, bites her, and inserts his clasper into her cloaca.

Physical Characteristics The lemon shark was named for its yellow color. They can grow to 10 feet in length.
