Synthesis Essay September 14, 2014

Grading Marks QI – Quotation Integration Vague Claim – your claim should be more precise Central Claim, E, L Answer the Question! Plan! – Plan your essay before writing CA - counterargument

Answer the Question Evaluate the most important factors that a school should consider before using particular technologies in curriculum and instruction. Evaluate – to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality. Factors – Make a claim about factors, not about technology in general. Most important – Make sure you choose the most important reasons. Is handwriting so important? Explain why your factors are so important to consider.

Take a position Don’t be afraid to take a position State your claim boldly “I think that technology is not good for students.” “One thinks that technology is not good for students.” “Technology is not good for students.” “Some say that using technology is bad. Others say that it is good,” is not a claim.

Use the sources Entering the conversation… Your essay is a REACTION to the readings

Link Back to your Central Claim Evidence - According to Source C, it says, “…Will they be able to discern cause and effect, put together a coherent story line, think scientifically, read a book with a single argument rather than a set of essays?” Link - This would be really bad if children would need the help of a technology device to read a book and even think for them. If school don’t take this into consideration students would not be able to think or explain something without technology.

Shorter Quotes We will speak more about quote integration later in the year, but try to copy down only the words you need, not entire sentences. Use an ellipsis to shorten quotes ….

Finish the Counterargument “Students at Empire High School were able to afford brand new iBooks, but that doesn’t mean every U.S. public high school can. This Arizona high school only had to provide for 340 students, while other high schools could have a total of more than 300 students just in a graduating class. But suppose U.S. public high schools could afford the newest technology for there students. It isn’t just that a flat fee. Other costs to be considered are the dowloads of all necessary textbooks and/or information. Also costs to keep them working smoothly or replacing the device.”

Author’s Words in Quotes So much processed information - video, images, flashing screens – is not good. It can hurt a child’s informational metabolism. So much “processed information” - video, images, flashing screens – is not good. It can hurt a child’s “informational metabolism”.

Grade Your central claim must answer the question and take a clear position. Use the sources Finish your counterarguments
