T eaching About Thanksgiving: Integration Language Arts, Science and Art Instruction Narrated by Chief Jake Swamp in English and in the Mohawk language. Giving Thanks is a wonderful program for integrating language arts, science and art instruction. Ask your students (recommended grades 2-5) to write their own global Thanksgiving good morning message focusing on the wonder of the world around them. Emphasize students include factual/accurate science information in their descriptive language. The second slide has a variety of videos to help you use media literacy strategies to teach students about the science that exists in the world around us. Teach students about the elements of foreground and background, shading and how to use line to show motion; ask them to illustrate their stories using these elements. If you have ESL students included in your class, ask them to write their story in their first language. Help them understand how the pictures they create can help everyone in the class "read" their good morning message. I recommend using screen captures from the video to teach about foreground, background, shading, line, etc. See the next slide for examples. Teacher Notes: Copyright 2011 New Dimension Media
