Activity 1: Quick Write On a sheet of notebook paper, identify specific elements of your family’s culture, Texas culture, and American culture that people from another country would find interesting and possibly challenging. 5 5  Why is it important to understand a country’s culture when conducting business?  What elements of culture do you feel would be most important in business interactions? Government- Create the policies and rules for business. It is important to understand the type of government that runs the country, current economic conditions, as well as industries and jobs available. 6 6 Role of Society’s Institutions- The roles of education, gender, mobility, and the class system of a country are important in determining the country’s culture and will impact business and buying decisions. 7 7 Communication- Many countries conduct business in the English language; however, people may prefer to complete business transactions in their native language. Body language, eye contact, personal space, etc. are all a part of a business culture and should be researched before conducting business in a specific country to avoid offending your business partner or counterpart. 8 8 Business Practices/Etiquette- Every country has business preferences in dress, meeting times, business meals, and titles when addressing people. There are also taboos in every culture that you will want to be aware of so you do not accidentally commit one. EX: Most countries encourage modest business dress code with black and dark blue for suits, ties that are not too bright, and simple jewelry for women. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2014. Research the three elements below as viewed in the U. S. and two other countries that are important trading partners with America. Then create a chart with the information. 10 10 Choose a country to research elements of the culture important for business. Create a presentation, each slide should include three facts and an image for each category. On the final slide, write a paragraph explaining the role and importance of culture in conducting global business.
