Carlos Slim His father, Julian, traveled from Lebanon to Mexico in He opened a small store in the south of Mexico City. Through hard work and shrewd investments he became a successful businessman.

Carlos Slim Slim became an engineer at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Known as UNAM. He helped his father on his family business until 1965.

Carlos Slim In 1965 he got married. In 1966 he established Grupo Carso, whose name combines the first two syllables of Carlos and Soumaya (his wife) and started to grow slowly until 1990.

Carlos Slim During this time, Carlos, and his holding company had bought many campanies of all kinds including mines, real state, investments and insurance. He also found the Carso foundation which helps people from Mexico in many ways.

Carlos Slim In 1990 his fortune was of about 10 millions. At year-end, the company wins the bid to acquire Telmex, after which Carso Global Telecom, the holding company for Telmex, is created. The brand Telcel is also created.

Carlos Slim Slim took advantage of a Mexico's political problem and bought Seguros de Mexico, Mexico's largest insurer, for just $44 million. Slim knows very well how "putting together monopolies" can make real money.
