How Landscape Architecture Works….. Enhancing the Department’s Stewardship Role in concert with Environmental and Hydraulic Design East Region Landscape Architecture Services February, 2009

Landscape Architecture In this presentation we will cover Design Services that will enhance the combined production capabilities of Hydraulics, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental in the development of Storm Water Best Management Practices and other environmentally friendly design solutions.

Landscape Architecture Such as developing bio-retention basins for medians and roadside swales as a “Right-of-Way Efficient” way way of capturing runoff… Here is an example project in Williamsburg… Bioretention can also be incorporated into Urban Corridors…

Why are Proper Plans, Details and Specifications important for this process? Project Plans and Details in conjunction with written Special Provisions provide information to the Contractor and Biddable Documentation to achieve the desired product.

A Complete Design Should Contain: Complete Plans prepared by a Certified Professional Complete Details Representing Work to be Performed Complete Summary and Cost Estimate of Materials and Labor Project Special Provisions covering Materials and Procedures not covered in the R&B Spec. Book

Projects Might also include design features for Environmental Education Timber Structures… Interpretive Signs

Landscape Architecture Working as a Team, VDOT staff can produce the same high quality results for Bio-retention and Stream Restoration that we expect from our Consultants. Hydraulics Environmental Landscape Architecture Permit Coord. Environmental Requirements Microclimate Considerations Grading Review Plant Selection Summary / Estimate Details / Specs Planting Plan Storm Water Calculations Drainage Design Plant Selection Grading Plan RESULTS: Complete Plans Preparation
