National Weather Service Louisville, Kentucky Significant Severe Weather Event Expected Multimedia Hazardous Weather Briefing This is an event-driven hazardous weather briefing compiled by staff at the NWS office in Louisville at 500 AM EST on March 2 nd, Updates may be made if time and staffing permit. This briefing should not be used beyond Noon EST on March 2 nd, 2012 or if local weather conditions become unrepresentative.

Storm Prediction Center Severe Weather Outlook

Main Threat: Tornadoes Hatched area indicates potential for strong/violent and long track tornadoes

Damaging Wind Threat Hatched area indicates potential for significant wind event greater than 75 MPH.

Hail Threat Hatched area indicates potential for hail stones greater than 2” in diameter.

Morning Storms Warm front will bring widespread showers and thunderstorms from south to north this morning. Large hail the main threat More widespread, but less severe than the afternoon

Afternoon/Evening Storms Storms will erupt this afternoon ahead of a strong cold front. Most likely time for renewed convection 2pm – 8pm This is when the tornadoes (a few potentially strong and long tracked) would be possible, along with large hail and damaging winds Less widespread, but more severe than the morning Event may end with individual storms forming into a line and quickly racing east this evening

Have a Plan in Place Before the storms hit, know what you and your family will do if a warning is issued for your location Review and practice the plan with everyone in your household or workplace

Tornado Warning Safety Tips Mobile homes are very susceptible to tornadoes and damaging winds. Abandon them and go to a substantial structure. If in a home, go to the basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Cover yourself with blankets or a mattress and use helmets if available.

Summary Storms with large hail possible into mid morning New storms with tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds possible in the afternoon Storm motion will be quite fast, generally from southwest to northeast at 40 to 50 mph.
