Aims of the session Look at how children are using the Internet Raise awareness of cyber Safety issues Show examples of available support Offer guidance on keeping your children safe  Please take 5 minutes to complete the parent e-safety survey on your seats. It will help inform you about areas that you may need to develop in order to help protect your child online and develop a positive attitude when they are using the internet.

Raising responsible digital citizens Impa ct of ICT in schoo l

Our children have grown up using the internet and most could not imagine a world without; - iPhones - iPads - Games consoles - Google - s - Facebook They feel confident using new sites and technologies and can move from site to site with ease. Impact of ICT at home

Prevent /Respond to the negative Promote the positive

In school we have restrictions, internet controls and the benefit of monitoring the children in close proximity when they are online. We also have the new SEC cyber safety website that has recently been launched for schools in Qatar. Teachers will be sharing these resources with their classes during ICT lessons. Cyber safety in school

Risks involved with using the Internet  Unwittingly sharing personal information  Unwanted contact/grooming  Over usage – e.g. always checking FB account  Cyberbullying  Harmful content/illegal material  Privacy/digital footprints

1 st step to dealing with cyber safety issues with your children- communication! Talk with your children about what they like to do online. Ask them if they know the risks. Take an interest in what they do online!!! Let them know what they should do if they feel uncomfortable online. Discuss their role in being responsible online. Ask them about who they communicate with online. Let them see that parental controls are being used and let them know why.

Ideas for cyber safety discussions with your children A UK based cyber safety website with a variety of resources for parents. Useful Cyber café activity also available. An Australian based cyber safety website with additional options for parents to work with.

/ A website that shows parents the options that are available to update parental controls. 1.Click on ‘search for a tool.’ 2.Click on the alphabetical list of tested tools. Each one has been tested and graded.

Each piece of software is tested and reviewed. You can look at price (some of the best ones are free) and you can look at how each piece of software scored for reliability, effectiveness and overall security. Some recommendations- 1)K9 web protection 2)Net nanny 3)Qustodio (Top- rated by website)

Blocks unwanted pop up adverts on your computer by installing an app on google chrome. Highly recommended!!

Areas to think about with your family. Talk openly and honestly with them about these issues. Prevention is always better than cure!!
