… good for the environment and fair for the local people. Page 114 will help you to improve this answer by adding examples.

Africa Europe Asia We want the tourists to come and spend their money but we don’t want them to damage our home

Design your own Eco-Resort Choose an area in Gambia that you would like to open an Eco-Tourism Resort at the coast or inland. Describe what your resort would be like, what would you have there and what activities you will offer to the eco tourists. Explain how your Eco-Resort will be sustainable in Gambia. You can add a drawing to show what it will look like – remember to label and annotate (explain) what makes your resort sustainable.

What sustainable features will your eco-resort have? Make notes from the next slides they are displaed around the room too..

Features of an eco-resort. Solar panels - How is this sustainable?

Wind power – How is this sustainable?

Water wells – How is this sustainable?

Reed bed toilet – How is this sustainable?

The reeds use your poo for fertilizer (food) and their roots clean your pee so nice clean water comes out the end of the system.

Rainwater harvesting – How is this sustainable?

How could you improve the idea?

By putting the rainwater underground you keep it clean and fresh and also cool.

Use the skills of local builders and local materials – How is this sustainable?

Furniture from local materials – How is this sustainable?

Furniture from local materials – How is this sustainable?

Furniture from local materials – How is this sustainable?

Transport from local materials – How is this sustainable?

Growing food in the resort grounds – How is this sustainable?

Growing food in the resort grounds – How is this sustainable?

Bee keeping for honey in the resort grounds – How is this sustainable?

Is this a good answer? My resort is small so we did not need to build over much of the natural environment and we will not get too many tourists like Benidorm. The activities we offer are: guided walks, bike rides, and night time wildlife walks with night vision goggles. How could we make it better?

Is this a good answer? My eco-resort is sustainable because I will use solar power for everything, and since the building is so small, we did not harm the natural environment much. Local people guide all our activities and are paid a good wage. We serve local food that has been cooked in the traditional way by tribes people. How could we make it better? We will develop just one point.

This is Level 5 because it clearly shows how human activity can change the environment and gives examples and gives reasons. My eco-resort is sustainable because I will use solar power for everything such as lights and refrigeration, so I will not use electricity from a power station so I will reduce carbon emissions so not be contributing to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, so I will be doing my best to reduce global warming so helping to slow down climate change.

Design your own Eco-Resort Choose an area in Gambia that you would like to open an Eco-Tourism Resort at the coast or inland. Plenary Task – Evaluate a partners work – Assess if their eco- resort design is sustainable. Your design is good for the environment because …….. Your design is fair for local people because …….. Your design would be even better if ……….
