- for a fast and safe evacuation Immedia Rescue Sheet - for a fast and safe evacuation

Fires in health care facilities U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 6,240 structure fires in health care properties per year between 2006-2010. These fires caused annual averages of 6 civilian deaths 171 civilian injuries $52 million in property damage Source: U.S. Structure Fires in Nursing Homes, by Jennifer Flynn, NFPA, Quincy, MA, September 2008

Are healthcare facilities prepared for an evacuation? Full evacuation is very rare, but it happens from time to time Evacuation is not just caused by fire, but also electrical failure or extreme weather conditions Each care unit/department must be able to automatically and autonomously prepare their patients for evacuation in order to facilitate the evacuation efforts and to limit reliance on emergency services.

Evacuation must be planned Saving inhabitants with reduced mobility takes a lot of time so evacuation needs to be well planned-: Clear communication of evacuation procedure Have a system in place to contact sufficient number of personnel to assist in a short period of time Keeping escape routes clear and well marked Having evacuation tools such as wheelchairs, stretchers, trolleys etc. close to hand Establish collection points for patients Have a number of transport options Ensure employee safety and well-being Have a plan for temporary accommodation should the need arise Carry out practise drills with staff and residents

OSHA Training Institute Testing of Plans Carry out exercises with staff and residents Ensure participation in exercises Evaluate the exercise Consider lessons learned from actual events Adapt plans and equipment as required OSHA Training Institute

Rescue techniques = Transport techniques Run/walk - alone or with help Wheelchair - alone or with help In bed – with help Other evacuation tools Evacuation sheet – with help

Immedia Rescue Sheet Intended environment: Intended Use: Acute care Long-term care Intended Use: Emergency evacuations Transfer out of bed, and slide out to safety

Key Benefits Remains in place under the mattress so it is ready to use Does not interfere with daily bed making No outside help is required Quickly transfers a bed ridden patient, including the whole mattress out of the room and even down stairs Saves precious time during the chaotic environment of an evacuation The patient is close to the ground, so exposure to smoke or other toxins is minimised Symmetrical design allows evacuation from both foot and head end Long handles reduce strain in the back Safety straps fasten the patient securely during evacuation Low friction on the underside New clearer, instruction label Waterproof Washable

A Clear Instruction label

Positioning Rescue fits permanently under the mattress The orange straps and instruction label are down against the frame of the bed for ease of visibility and use Fastened to the corners of the mattress with elastic corner straps The buckles are positioned for easy access The orange handles is placed at the head and bed end Make the bed as usual

Evacuation Pull the orange straps with the buckles out and lay over the patient and duvet. Fasten these straps to the straps on the other side, and tighten so that the mattress bends upwards on each side. Use the handle at the head end and pull the patient and mattress gently off the bed frame. Hold the handle high, giving the patient maximum protection when the mattress touches the floor. The patient can now be transferred out of the room, down stairs and out to safety or collection point The mattress and bed duvet protect the patient against further injury and cold.
