1 1 Volunteer Orientation ENVIRONMENT OF CARE OVERVIEW

2 Environment of Care & Life Safety  The goal of the Environment of Care (EC) and the Life Safety Programs is to provide a safe, functional and effective environment for patients, staff and visitors.  Applies to all buildings, equipment, facilities and operations where patients are housed or treated.  Includes the following categories: Safety, Security, Fire and Life Safety, Medical Equipment, Hazardous Materials and Utilities Management 2

3 Fire and Life Safety  Goal: to familiarize yourself with the areas in which you work  Smoke and Tobacco Free Campus – no smoking anywhere including parking lots  ABC Fire Extinguishers in all buildings: can be used on all types of fires  Fire Alarms – activate on floor of initiation in Medical Centers & multiple floors in non-inpatient buildings  Fire Drill Participation is required if in buildings during activation  In the Event of an actual fire use the acronym – R.A.C.E. Rescue/remove yourself and others from danger Activate the alarm; call #36 or 911 Contain the fire; close doors and windows Extinguish if safe to do OR Evacuate 3

4 Fire and Life Safety  PASS Pull the pin out Aim the nozzle Squeeze the trigger Sweeping motions from side to side (slowly) 4

5 Hazardous Materials  Hazardous materials are used throughout the medical center  Includes chemical, biological, pharmaceutical, radioactive and electronic materials  Containers holding hazardous materials have labels with emergency response & storage precaution information  Always read the labels before handling  Don’t remove labels 5

6 Hazardous Materials  Spills & Response: Report spills to Security or call the operator – a response team or person will be dispatched. Address spills by containing them with drop cloths and mark them with the pop up wet floor signs  Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s) available online on the Mednet homepage 6

7 Utilities Management  Utilities Management is managed by Health System Facilities or Building Management in leased space  Red outlets and switches indicate “Emergency Power” and are for emergency electrical items and critical patient care equipment only  Reporting:  Issues of maintenance should be reported to your supervisor or to Security. They will ensure that facilities is contacted. Examples of issues to report: broken doors, lights out, leaking plumbing, exit signage out, etc. 7

8 Utilities Management  Flood Procedures (uncontrolled release of clean or dirty water)  Call #36 (advise operator if water is clean or dirty)  Communications calls the following departments to respond: EVS, Safety, Facilities, Epidemiology (optional in WW) and Quality Management (SM only) 8

9 General Safety  Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility and Be Smart About Safety  Follow all safety rules and be aware of the environment  Report safety hazards to supervisor and Safety Department  Protect yourself from injury at all times – remember proper lifting and pushing techniques  If you are injured on the job: Report injury to supervisor – if necessary you will be sent to Occupational/Employee Health (O/EH) or the Emergency Department (ED) after hours 9

10 General Safety  Ergonomics and Back Injury Prevention Program  Tailor the environment to the employee (chair, wrist rest, foot rest, automation, lifting devices, transporting devices)  Ergonomic assessments conduct routinely and upon request  Use good body mechanics, always  Indoor Air Quality  In Health System buildings: for emergent issues call Hospital Communications or for ongoing issues call the Safety Department 10

11 General Security  Report suspicious activities/persons or request assistance from Security and to request an security escort please call x99100  Safety Tips:  Don’t bring valuables to work. Lock up all belongings.  Park in well-lit area; don’t linger in parking structures.  Always wear your ID badge when on hospital property  After Hours Access: Santa Monica/16 th Street Entrance

12 Emergency Overhead Code Pages  Emergency overhead pages are used at the hospital to alert staff to potential emergency situations and to summon staff who are responsible for responding to specific emergency situations.  CODE RED: Fire Alarm  CODE PINK: Infant Abduction  CODE PURPLE: Child Abduction  CODE GRAY: Abusive or Combative Person SILVER:  CODE SILVER: Person with Weapon/Hostage Situation
