ABIGAIL ADAMS- Wife of John Adams, member of the Continental Congress, said “Remember the Ladies…or we’ll be having a revolution of our own…” JOHN ADAMS- Lawyer and politician; defended the British soldiers accused in the Boston Massacre; Member of the Continental Congress, strong supporter of independence WENTWORTH CHESWELL- African American Patriot, like Paul Revere he made an all-night ride back from Boston to warn his community of the British attacking, served in the army in the Battle of Saratoga SAMUEL ADAMS- played a role in many of the events which contributed to the Revolution, organized opposition to the Stamp Act, member of the Sons of Liberty (like a club for patriots), and was there during the Boston Massacre MERCY OTIS WARREN- wife of a Massachusetts patriot, anonymously wrote several articles supporting the Patriot cause and Revolution JAMES ARMISTEAD- slave from Virginia, Marquis de Lafayette recruited him as a spy for the Continental Army, brought vital information to the Americans and contributed to the victory at Yorktown BENJAMIN FRANKLIN- member of the committee which wrote the Declaration of Independence, Represented the Colonies, negotiated the friendship (alliance) with France and the Treaty of Paris (ended the war). BERNARDO DE GALVEZ- Spanish nobleman who became governor in the province of Louisiana (1777), protected American ships in the port of New Orleans, and helped transport war supplies, fought to protect Louisiana

CRISPUS ATTUCKS- A black man, became the first casualty of the American Revolution when he was shot and killed at the Boston Massacre KING GEORGE III- Feared the loss of the colonies would inspire others to rebel, maintained an aggressive policy of control over the colonies, enforced royal authority HAYM SOLOMON- A Polish- born Jewish immigrant who played an important role in financing the Revolution (starting with his own funds); arrested by the British as a spy, used by the British as an interpreter, encouraged British soldiers to abandon the fight, and became the paymaster of French troops in America (guy who wrote out the checks to pay soldiers) PATRICK HENRY- Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, spoke against the Stamp Act, said “Give me Liberty or Give me Death” THOMAS JEFFERSON- Leader in the American Revolution, member of the Continental Congress, member of the Committee who wrote the Declaration of Independence The MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE- French aristocrat (noble), fought in the American Revolution ( ), major-general of the colonial army, trained colonial soldiers, France sent him as help to the colonies THOMAS PAINE- journalist, writer, wrote the pamphlet, “Common Sense” and “The Crisis”, persuading colonists to join the Patriot cause GEORGE WASHINGTON- resident of Virginia, planter, soldier in the French and Indian War, member of the Continental Congress, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, future first president of the United States

PAUL REVERE- warned of the arrival of British attacks by riding and yelling out “ The British are coming!”, drew portrayal of the Boston Massacre which caused wide-spread anger throughout the colonies JOHN HANCOCK- Had a deep appreciation for freedom and colonial rights, member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, one of the first to sign the Declaration BENEDICT ARNOLD- Traitor to the American colonists because he was not promoted in rank in the army
