of Modest Apparel 1 Timothy 2:9,10

“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”

1 Timothy 2:9,10 MODEST kosmios (kos-mee-os) Strong’s – “Orderly, i.e. decorous.” Vine’s – “Orderly, well-arranged, decent, modest" Thayer’s - “Well arranged, seemly, modest” Used 1 other time in the NT and is rendered “good behavior” (1 Tm. 3:2).

1 Peter 3:1-4 “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

“Dress (3)(1) The inner garment was the most essential article of dress. It was a closely-fitting garment, resembling in form and use our shirt, though unfortunately translated “coat” in the Authorized Version. The material of which it was made was either wool, cotton or linen. It was without sleeves, and reached only to the knee. Another kind reached to the wrists and ankles. It was in either case kept close to the body by a girdle, and the fold formed by the overlapping of the robe served as an inner pocket.”

A person wearing the inner garment alone was described as naked” (Peloubet, 1947).

Nakedness and the Law  Genesis 9:20-25 – “And he said, Cursed be Canaan….”  Leviticus 18:6,7 – “The nakedness of thy father, or thy mother, shalt thou not uncover….”  Habakkuk 2:15 – “Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness.”

Exodus 20:26 “Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine alter, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.”

Genesis 2 & 3

Gen. 3 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. APRON: Girdle, loin-covering (Brown, Heb. & Eng. Lexicon, p. 292) APRON: Girdle, loin-covering (Brown, Heb. & Eng. Lexicon, p. 292) 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. COAT: Generally with sleeves, coming down to the knees, rarely to the ankles (Gesenius, Heb. & Chaldee Lexicon, p. 420) COAT: Generally with sleeves, coming down to the knees, rarely to the ankles (Gesenius, Heb. & Chaldee Lexicon, p. 420)

Isaiah 47:1-3 “ 1 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. 2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.”

Isaiah 47:1-3 “ 1 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. 2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. 3 Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man. ”

Thigh “the part of the human leg between the hip and the knee.”

 Disregard God by disregarding His word (Jn. 12:48-49; cf. 1 Sam. 8:7).  Defile and sear your conscience (1 Cor. 8:7; 1 Tim. 4:2).  Lose your sense of shame (Jer. 6:15; 8:12).  You conform to the world (Rom. 12:1-2).  Will likely move to more immodesty (2 Tim. 3:13).  Will likely move to other forms of worldliness (2 Tim. 3:13).  Will resent questions and teaching on the subject (Acts 22:22).

 Can I stand, walk, sit, kneel, bend over, etc., in this clothing without being "naked" by biblical standards?  Does my clothing emphasize certain body parts or area that would tend to provoke lust in others?  Does my clothing stir admiration and respect for me or does it prompt opinions otherwise?

 Since clothing can indicate character (cf. Prov. 7:10), would my clothing suggest an abundance or lack of upright character?  What kind of influence will my clothing have on those who are not Christians?  What kind of influence will my clothing have on those who are Christians?  Would I wear this if Jesus was in my personal physical presence?

Exposing the shame of nakedness

As a ring of gold in a swine's snout, So is a lovely woman who lacks discretion. - Proverbs 11:22

CLIFF OF UNGODLINESS S Which one describes YOU? “I will get as close to the edge as I can without going over” or “I will get as far away from the edge as I can"

It’s important because…. …we want to please God (Gal. 1:10) …we are the light of the world (Mt. 5:14) …we are to be example of the believers (1 Tm. 4:12) …we are to present ourselves as a living sacrifice (Rm. 12:1) …we are to be transformed as opposed to conformed (Rm. 12:2) …someday we will give account on that great Judgment Day (2 Cor. 5:10)
