Wiltshire Youth Cricket League National Cricket Playing Survey 2014 Results

Background The ECB’s aim is to get ‘more people playing more frequently in teams’ Participation is currently on the decline The National Cricket Playing Survey was launched to gather insight on what the needs, wants and issues are for current and lapsed players

Our responsibilities To reduce the speed of decline in Cricket participation To use the insight from the NCPS to retain and recruit players to the game To show players that we value their input and that we will listen to their views

Thank you In Wiltshire, we received 762 responses We are now able to look at specific levels of the game within specific leagues and competitions We now have a mandate to make change

Considerations The impact of ignoring a significant sample of dissatisfied or unhappy players is greater than choosing to keep things the same for a majority sample of happy or satisfied players i.e. A 30% or higher dissatisfaction or unhappy score is significant enough to be acted on. The 70% or lower will consist of people with indifferent views and some that are genuinely happy. However, the 30% dissatisfied or unhappy have strong enough views to actively voice their dissatisfaction

Considerations The survey has been predominantly completed by core cricketers. However, the needs of occasional cricketers must also be considered There is also informal feedback to consider

Other Feedback Clubs vary greatly in terms of the abilities of their players and so a rigid offer of League cricket won’t appeal to all Retaining players at age 15 is becoming increasingly difficult for some

Conclusions Main issues for year olds Struggle to balance with other commitments Want fewer overs Importance of Spirit of the Game Convenience compared with other sports

Conclusions There needs to be flexibility in our ‘offer’ to clubs across all leagues There needs to be a variety of ‘offers’ available to clubs to ensure players of all abilities and backgrounds can participate These results are not WYCL specific
