Rhyme and Repetition With the help of Shel Silverstein

Repetition Repetition is when a word or a group of words is repeated to provide emphasis. Let’s look at a few poems and see if we can find some repetition.

Rhyme Rhyme is the correspondence of sounds at the end of words. Not all poems have rhyme, but when they do, it provides a “sing-song” type feeling to the piece.

Your Turn! Today, you are going to start to write a poem about you! You can use your “I” Map for inspiration. Your poem needs to have either rhyme or repetition. It can have both, too, but it doesn’t have to.

Places I Have Been I am a book lover. I can read page after page after page, Each one taking me somewhere new. I can be at Hogwarts with Harry, Or in London with Elizabeth Bennett, wondering about Darcy. I can be with Jacob and his wives. I can be dreaming about my vampire boyfriend. I can be fighting monsters, Or falling in love over and over again. I am a lover of books.

Mom-ee! I am a mom. I clean noses and wash socks, I give bathes and play with blocks. I give healing kisses and hugs, I help little boys catch bugs. I wonder if he’ll even know how constantly my love for him grows. I am a mom.
