Chanel August 19th, 1883 – January 10th, 1971. She adopted the nickname Coco during a brief career as a cafe and concert singer. She set up a millinery shop in Paris in 1910 and her simple hats soon became popular. By the 1920s, her fashion house had expanded considerably. She launched a perfume and also designed stage costumes for plays. http://womenshistory.about.com/od/chanelcoco/a/coco_chanel.htm

Influence Chanel influenced the way women dressed by replacing the corset with comfort and casual elegance attire. Her relaxed designs, short skirts, and casual looks were in sharp contrast to the corset fashions popular in the previous decades. Chanel herself dressed in mannish clothes, and adapted these more comfortable fashions which other women also found liberating. http://womenshistory.about.com/od/chanelcoco/a/coco_chanel.htm

Jean Patou Jean Patou (1880-1936) was born in Normandy in northwestern France. Patou opened a dressmaking and fur establishment that failed but he opened up a tailoring business in Paris the following year. He designed sportswear along with beaded and lace embellished garments. He put his "JP" monogram on his garments. He was the first fashion designer to exploit the cachet of a well-known name. http://fashion-history.lovetoknow.com/fashion-clothing-industry/fashion-designers/jean-patou
