The Role of Language and Story

OBJECTIVES Students will be able to explain the five registers of language. Students will be able to explain the five registers of language. Students will understand the difference between casual and formal register. Students will understand the difference between casual and formal register. Students will understand the difference between primary and secondary discourse. Students will understand the difference between primary and secondary discourse.

Discourse – Patterns and Primary/Secondary PATTERNS PATTERNS  formal – straight to the point  Casual – go around and around, then to the point PRIMARY AND PRIMARY ANDSECONDARY  Primary is the first acquired language  Secondary is the language of the larger society

What does this info mean in the school setting?
