Teacher Evaluation: Cultural Competence PPS- PAT Teacher Evaluation Committee June 29 th and 30 th

Questions: How will culturally competent practices be incorporated in this new tool? What supports are in place to increase teacher and leader efficacy with respect to cultural competence?

Why? Yes deep knowledge, good methods, and materials in education matter a great deal; however, it appears that so much of educational reform is the search for a “one – trick pony,” a “silver bullet,” or anything that does not require us to consider the complexities of a nurturing environment. “Programs” cannot substitute for the humanity of teachers [adults] that is the key element to student success. We cannot minimize the place of love, “fire in the belly,” vision, values determination, commitment, hard work, consistency, and strong, bonded relationships on the part of teachers [and staff]. –Asa Hilliard

Viewing all of our work with an Equity Lens Leadership week communications pack 4 This graph, originally shared with PPS by Pacific Education Group, depicts the composite SAT scores for students by race and income status. Taken from a 12 year College Board study in late 80s-early 90s.

Definition Cultural Competence “The knowledge, attitudes, skills, and practices that allow individuals to form relationships, and create learning environments that support academic achievement and personal development of learners from diverse racial and cultural groups.”

Cultural Competence Includes: Recognizing the educational impact of race and culture Addressing demographic inequities in achievement Building relationships across racial and cultural differences Adapting curriculum to reflect racial and cultural diversity Ongoing self reflection about one’s cultural competence

Culturally Competent Practices Include: 1.communication of high expectations, 2.active teaching and leadership methods, 3.educator as facilitator, 4.positive perspectives on parents and families of culturally and linguistically diverse students, 5.cultural sensitivity, 6.reshaping the curriculum, 7.culturally mediated instruction, 8.student-controlled classroom discourse, and 9.small-group instruction and academically related discourse. (AEL, 2004)
