Early History of Macomb County

Macomb County organized in It was the third county in Michigan. Early settlers were French and Native Americans. American settlement began in earnest after the Erie Canal opened in 1825.

Early History of Macomb County The charter culture was Yankee and Yorker. 2/3 of settlers were from New York and New England. Characteristics: ▫Decentralized town plan ▫Commercial focus ▫Wheat/ dairy culture (Macomb Variant-unusually high percentage of Corn Production) ▫Republican party ▫Temperance culture

Macomb County The educational attainment of the of Macomb County shows a pattern characteristic of a area of skilled and technical workers: Higher than average High School averages and lower than average college completion. 86.8% of Macomb County residents completed high school or above, while 21.1% hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher (the national figures are 84% and 27% respectively). 9.6% of the county’s population is foreign born. Median Family income in Macomb County is $69,063, which is higher than the national average of $60, % of Macomb County residents live below the poverty level.
