 This chapter highlights Jesus the Teacher  Teaches Christian Ethics (Beatitudes)  The “first Gospel”- emphasis on fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies (link between Old and New Testaments)

 Plays a vital role in Christian instruction and worship.  We pray Matthew’s version of the Lord’s Prayer  Contains 80% of Mark’s Gospel

 Written in Greek for a Greek-speaking Jewish Christian Church.  Written near Antioch, Syria between 80-85AD  Written for a Jewish Christian Audience

 Judgment- The 2 nd coming of Christ  Jesus is Emmanuel- “God with us” Gentiles and Jews  Discipleship- Following Jesus requires humility, rejection and suffering  Church- ekklesia, liturgy and community  Right Instruction- righteousness, prayer and conversion

 Portrays Jesus as the sole teacher of the Word.  Depicts Jesus as a new Moses who has brought a new law to God’s people.  Teachings split up into 5 discourses

 1 st and most important discourse.  Summarizes the New Law of the Gospel.  Collects Jesus’ ethical teachings.  Interior Conversion

 Jesus instructs his Apostles to imitate his missionary.  Jesus directs his Apostles to preach in a spirit of poverty like he did.  Anyone who testifies about Him will find life in death.

 Help reveal the nature of the Kingdom of Heaven  Jesus used parables to confound outsiders and show the truth to insiders.

 The Church lives off of the Word of the Lord and therefore becomes the Body of Christ.  Jesus establishes the Church and appoints Peter as its earthly leader.  Pope, with the help of God, guides Church leaders in how to act and preach the Word.

 Eschatological Discourse- “end time”  No man knows the exact time of the end so we must stay prepared for His arrival.  Unique to Matthew is Jesus’ last discourse where the Son of man will come through the form of a shepherd, Lord and king to separate the sheep form the goats.

The Gospel of Matthew

 Important RQ’s from the chapter, and their answers  Identify the author of the gospel of Matthew.  He is usually referred to as Levi, a tax collector who Jesus called to as an apostle

 Offer evidence that Matthew wrote after Mark.  Matthew’s gospel draws on Material from Mark.

 Discuss two specific teachings of Jesus in his “Missionary Discourse”, Matthew 10.  1. The spirit will help the disciples stand firm and testify courageously to the gospel truth  2. God the father, who has counted every hair on their heads, will watch over them with love and tenderness.

 List at least three key themes treated in Matthew’s gospel.  Judgment  Jesus is Emmanuel  Discipleship  Church  Right Instruction

 “Such was his intention, when, behold, the angel of the lord appeared to him in a dream and said ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy spirit that this child has been conceived in her.’” (Matthew 1:20)

 “The tempter approached and said to him, ‘If you are the son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.’ He said in reply, ‘It is written: ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that come forth from the mouths of God’’” (Matthew 2:4-5)

 “Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and his disciples, saying, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.’” (Matthew 23: 1-3)

 “they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall. But when he had tasted it he refused to drink. After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting lots; then they sat down and kept watch over him there.” (Matthew 27: 34-36)

 Any observations on how Matthew compares to any of the other three authors?  In background  Writing style  Intended audience

  During this power point we have discussed Mathew’s occupation his job and his simple life style and I shall summarize these key points. Matthew was a tax collector who had quit his occupation to follow Christ as one of his disciples.
