I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). (not in the out line) Romans 1:16-17 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith unto faith: as it is written, ‘But the righteous shall live by faith.’” (ASV)

What is the meaning of faith unto faith in v. 17? What is the meaning of faith unto faith in v. 17? Will the righteous live by faith alone v.17? Will the righteous live by faith alone v.17?

I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). (not in the out line) “But the righteous shall live by faith” is a direct quotation of Habakkuk 2:4. “But the righteous shall live by faith” is a direct quotation of Habakkuk 2:4. To answer the questions presented we need to look at what the original languages meant and the context of the quotation. Let us read Habakkuk 1 and 2. I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). (not in the out line) The form EMUNAH, generally rendered faithfulness, is found in Hab. 2:4 where we read, ‘The just shall live by his faith’---words which ought to be read in connection with the fifth verse of the first chapter, ‘I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told to you.’ (R.B. Girdlestone’s Synonyms of the Old Testament p. 102) The form EMUNAH, generally rendered faithfulness, is found in Hab. 102)

I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). (not in the out line) EMUNAH is used of the steadiness of the hands of Moses in Exodus 17:12; and of the stability of the times in Isaiah 33:6. (R.B. Girdlestone’s Synonyms of the Old Testament p. 103) EMUNAH is used of the steadiness of the hands of Moses in Exodus 17:12; and of the stability of the times in Isaiah 33:6. (R.B. Girdlestone’s Synonyms of the Old Testament p. 103) Let us read the verses again, this time let us substitute faith by faithfulness as it should have been rendered. Let us read the verses again, this time let us substitute faith by faithfulness as it should have been rendered.

I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). (not in the out line) Romans 1:17 – “For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith unto faith: as it is written, But the righteous shall live by [faithfulness].” (ASV) The word faithfulness sets the mood or the context for the use of the word faith for the rest of the chapter and the rest of the book.

I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). (not in the out line) Defenition of Faithfulness- to act upon your faith. Defenition of Faithfulness- to act upon your faith. I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). (not in the out line) More evidences that Faith alone cannot save man. Faith without works is dead (James 2:14-20; 26). Faith without works is dead (James 2:14-20; 26). “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” (James 2:23) “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” (James 2:23) “Except ye repent …” (Luke 13:3; Acts 3:19; 11:18). “Except ye repent …” (Luke 13:3; Acts 3:19; 11:18). “If you abide in my word…” (Jn. 8:24, 31, 32). “If you abide in my word…” (Jn. 8:24, 31, 32). We must confess Him (Jn. 12:42-43) We must confess Him (Jn. 12:42-43) He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved (Mark 16:16). He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved (Mark 16:16).

I. THE GENTILES’ NEED OF THE GOSPEL (1:1-32). D. Wrath of God revealed against Unrighteousness (1:18-23). 1. Gentiles had knowledge of Deity through creation. (Ps. 19:1; Acts 14:15-17) 2. But Gentiles did not glorify God as Creator.
