Doodle only wants to please his brother. Resolution: Despite the grand plan to make Doodle like everyone else, Brother fails and Doodle dies.

Theme: We often hurt the ones we love – “There is within me a knot of cruelty born by the stream of love, much as our blood sometimes bears the seed of our destruction.” The human need for companionship and love – “Brother, don’t leave me.” Pride – “Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death.”

Literary Elements and Techniques: Point of View – first person participant (Brother) Foreshadowing – the first paragraph (images of death), the coffin, Doodle’s statements to Brother about not hurting or leaving him, the death of the scarlet ibis.
