Conneaut Area Senior High School Music Department Classes: All Music classes at CASH award academic credit toward graduation!

Concert Band Grades 9-10 and Grades (2 separate classes) Concert Band is a graded class that meets Monday through Friday of each week. You earn credit towards graduation for this class.

Concert Band Each student also has a weekly graded lesson during the school day. Sr. High Band usually has 4 performances during the school year: Fall Pops Concert, Winter Concert, performance at the middle and/or elementary schools, Spring Concert

Concert Choir Grades 9-10 and Grades (2 separate classes) Concert Choir is a graded class that meets Monday through Friday of each week. You earn credit towards graduation for this class.

Concert Choirs Sr. High Chorus usually has 4 performances during the school year: Fall Pops Concert, Winter Concert, performance at the middle and/or elementary schools, and Spring Concert. Choirs using iPads on Bohemian Rhapsody:

Band and Chorus classes are scheduled so that students can be in BOTH groups. 9/10 Chorus meets at the same time as 11/12 Band, and 11/12 Chorus meets at the same time as 9/10 Band.

Honor’s Ensembles All members of the Concert Bands and Choirs have the opportunity to audition for PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) honors bands and choirs at various times during the school year. 9 th Graders may audition for the Jr. High District Band or Chorus, which covers students in Grades 7-9.

Honor’s Ensembles cont. 10th-12 th Graders may audition for Sr. High District Band or Chorus, from which they can advance further to Region, All-State and even All-East levels. 10 th -12 th Graders may also audition for the District Jazz festival; and may audition via recording for All-State Jazz.

Honor’s Ensembles cont. Conneaut District has a long history of excellence in the PMEA ensembles, advancing students to 13 of the last 20 All-State festivals, and 3 All-Eastern festivals.

Honor’s Ensembles cont. Members of the Sr. High Band also have the opportunity to participate in the Crawford County Band Festival at Allegheny College.

Music Appreciation Grades 9-12 (one semester) This class focuses on the history of Western music over the last 1,000 years. History of American Music Grades 9-12 (one semester) The history of American Music from early Jazz through current rock styles and artists.

Intro to Guitar Grades 9-12 (one semester) Beginning guitar class. Guitars are available for use. Students will learn to read standard music notation, guitar tablature and chords. After the basics are covered, a strong emphasis is placed on playing Intermediate Guitar Grades 9-12 (one semester) (This class is still in the planning stages) Picking up where the Intro to Guitar class leaves off. Advanced styles and independent research. Pre-requisite: Intro to Guitar; or audition/interview.

Extra-curricular Groups:

Conneaut Area EAGLE Marching Band The CASH Marching Band represents the school and community at parades, band shows and football games. The band has approximately 20 performances during the school year, mostly during the Fall. The Band practices during the summer, including a 2-week camp; and also practices two evenings per week during the Fall. Performances are on Fridays and Saturdays.

EAGLE Marching Band (cont.) The marching band puts high importance on students excelling both on the marching field and in the classroom. Student tutors are available. Many valedictorians, salutatorians and high honors students are in the marching band each year, including one each of the valedictorians and salutatorians from the CASH Class of 2014!

Jazz Ensemble The Jazz Ensemble plays during the winter and spring. They rehearse after school. Jazz Ensemble is by audition or invitation only. Jazz Ensemble will participate in several interscholastic Jazz festivals during the Spring, the CASH Jazz Café during the spring, and is invited to play for community functions on occasion.

Small Ensembles 7 Feather Blues 7 Feather Blues plays music from many different genres including the blues, jazz, pop and rock. They rehearse after school 7 Feather Blues was the featured group at the first CASH Graduation ceremony last year!

Small Ensembles (cont.) Brass Ensemble The Brass Ensemble plays music written for brass instruments only – trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba. They rehearse after school. The Brass Ensemble is the featured group at the CASH 2014 Graduation ceremony!

Small Ensembles (cont.) Percussion Ensemble The Percussion Ensemble plays music written for drums and keyboard percussion (xylophone, marimba, bells, etc.). They rehearse after school. The ensemble will perform at one or more concerts throughout the year.

Small Ensembles (cont.) Vocal Ensemble The Vocal Ensemble is a select, auditioned singing group that covers vocal music from all styles and times. The Vocal Ensemble performs at the Conneaut Jazz Café and at various concerts and community events. Other ensembles may be added annually as student interest, participation and availability dictate.
