The island was also invaded by South Indian kingdoms and parts of the island were ruled intermittently by their dynasties. Buddhism arrived from India in the 3rd century BCE, brought by Bhikkhu Mahinda. Mahinda's mission won over the Sinhalese monarch Devanampiyatissa of Mihintale, who embraced the faith and propagated it throughout the Sinhalese population These are just a few of the photographs we took of Sri Lanka’s temples and ancient cities. This Slideshow includes The Temple of the Tooth and another three Temples which stand in the jungle on the outskirts of Kandy. Although based in Kandy, we travelled north to visit the rock fortress of Sigiriya, the holy city of Anuradhapura, the shrine at Mihintale, the huge Aukana Buddha, and the wonderful Gal Vihara rock carvings at the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa.
