It’s here to “light” up your writing. Adverb Clause: Day 2 It’s here to “light” up your writing.

Lesson Objectives Use adverb clauses to connect ideas smoothly Generate adverb clauses that explain when or why something happens.

Guiding Questions What is an Adverb Clause? What is its main purpose in writing?

Let’s Review What is an Adverb Clause? An adverb clause is a phrase added to a sentence to make sentences flow from one idea to the next.

Day With Dad

Story Analysis What did you notice about this story? What do you think could have been changed? Could using Adverb Clauses have helped this story? Why or Why not?

The Analogy As you may have noticed, the writer jumps around from one idea to the next. This is almost like flipping a light on and off over and over again. Let’s pretend the room is black. If I turned on the lamp in this corner, you would need to move to this corner to be able to read. If I turned off this lamp and turned on a lamp in the other corner, I would need to move to the other corner to read.

Investigation Let’s see how many times I have to turn the light off and on when I read Day With Dad. Every time I jump topics in the story, I will turn off the lamp in this corner and move to a different corner and turn on the lamp in the other corner. I will keep repeating this pattern until the end of the story. Are there any questions?

Day With Dad

Investigation How many times did I have to move from one corner to the next? What do you think would have happened if I would have used Adverb Clauses?

Let’s Practice Now we are going to practice finding adverb clauses in The Day I Finished the Fourth Harry Potter Book. As I read the story aloud, you need to follow along with your shoulder partner. Remember the three bags that Santa has on the poster? Everything on the poster is there to remind you of something. An adverb clause can be at the beginning of a sentence, in the middle, or at the end. B M E

Let’s Practice With your shoulder partner, you are now going to underline or highlight all of the adverb clauses you can find. Caution!!! Sometimes these words are not part of an adverb clause; they can have a different job in the sentence. Remember, adverb clauses will tell when or how. You know have 3 minutes to find the adverb clauses.

Let’s Practice Now that time is up, how many adverb clauses did you find? Who would like to tell us where they found two clauses? What were the jobs of these clauses? Did the clause tell you when or how? How did you know its job? Who would like to go next?

Conclusion What is the purpose of the adverb clause? Share with someone else in the room, the 10 adverb clause words.
