Lesson 101B – Isaiah 48–52 No Excuses

A Series of Worries/Excuses Again, remember the context. The people were in bondage (again) and they had been taken from their home. What kinds of complaints/excuses for being wicked might you have in a similar, more modern situation? Isaiah seems to forsee them all and, Messianically, shoots them down.

Excuse: “You have forgotten me” Isaiah 49:14 – They remembered the promises, and it seems that the Lord is no longer honoring them. v15-16 – What is the Lord’s response? – How could I forget my children? – “graven thee upon the palms of my hands” – Through our birth as children of God, and His own death to atone for our sins, we are always remembered.

Excuse: “Why did this happen to me?” We were the promised people, things weren’t supposed to be this way! Isaiah 50:1 – What is a bill of divorcement? – Deuteronomy 24:1-4 – Sometimes, parents would give up their children to be slaves of creditors – Who would the Lord be in debt to? “Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves” – This is your own fault

Excuse: “I’m afraid of the Lord” I can’t seem to ever please the Lord, so why even try if I only get in trouble? Isaiah 50:10 – “let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God” Isaiah 51:1-3 – Who is the rock? – Abraham – You are still the covenant people “and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord”

Excuse: “I’m afraid of the world” There is too much evil in the world, how can I ever live righteously and not give in? Isaiah 51:7-8 – “the moth shall eat them up like a garment” – “but my righteousness shall be for ever” Isaiah 51:11-13 – How can you trust in mortal man more than God? – “forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth… as if he were ready to destroy?” Fear of the world is simply lack of faith in God.

A Call to Action Now that the Lord has methodically torn down any excuse of Israel, He gives them a challenge and a promise. Challenge: Isaiah 52:1-2 – “shake thyself from the dust”, “loose thyself from the bands of thy neck” – Who is lifting us up? – We lift up ourselves. We have control of our situation. Promise: Isaiah 52:7-10 – This passage is quoted 4 times in the Book of Mormon – Who do these feet belong to? – The gatherers. What are the blessings?

Another Challenge and Promise Challenge: Isaiah 52:11 – “be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord” – What is the vessel? What do we fill it with? Promise: v12 – What is the promise? – “the God of Israel will be your rereward” – D&C 35:13-14 How can we possibly fear or have excuses when the Lord is with us?

Notebook Ideas Have you ever tried to use an excuse with the Lord? What happened? How will the Lord support you as you try to live righteously in a troubled world? What other challenges and promises does the Lord give us?
