Lesson Title: How did the Chartists try to achieve their aims? Know details about the rise and fall of Chartism Understand what methods Chartists used Skills: making decisions, selecting information, explanation

Starter Look at the poster opposite What tactics does this poster suggests the Chartists used? Discuss this question in your pairs and note down some ideas in the back of your books

Between 1837 and 1848 the Chartists used a number of tactics to try to achieve the Charter. They also experienced some high and many low points. Task One Draw the graph (to the right) on a new page, it should take up the whole page Cut out the nine events from the sheet and position each them where you think they belong on the graph in your book Was each event a ‘brilliant success’ or a ‘disastrous defeat’ you decide! Use the key to help you make a decision You should also put the events in date order along the y axis of your graph When you are certain you have each of the events in the correct place, stick them in! Key to plotting the events:  3 to 5: brilliant success for the Chartists  1 to 2: positive development for the Chartists  0: neither side wins  -1 to -2: a defeat for the Chartists  -3 to -5: a disastrous defeat for the Chartists Brilliant success Disastrous defeat

Task Two In your books… Write a paragraph explaining some of the violent and peaceful methods that the Chartists used You should also say which you think were the most successful

Plenary In 1848 the Third Charter was rejected However, by 1950 five out of the six points of the Charter had been achieved Does this mean that Chartism was a success or a failure? Write a paragraph in your books of no more than 100 words to explain your answer
