McCarthyism The 2 nd Red Scare Created by Mr. Steve Hauprich for the acceleration and remediation of US History students.

“Tailgunner Joe” was elected to the US Senate after WWII …and soon began a high profile reckless campaign of Anti-Communist fear mongering known as “McCarthyism”

The House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1947 began to seriously investigate suspicions of spying …

Congressman Richard Nixon helped expose the spying activities of Alger Hiss who once worked for the US Government under FDR.

The fall of China in 1949 to Mao Zedong and communist forces, along with new USSR nuclear capabilities… helped launch the 2 nd Red Scare and the rise of the era known as “McCarthyism”.

Political Cartoonist Herb Block helped to create the use of the term “McCarthyism”

McCarthy at times had support from very powerful people including staunch anti- communists like the Kennedys.

Senator Joe McCarthy published a book to further exploit peoples’ fears…using Machiavellian tactics to discredit all who would not follow him.

Reckless allegations of Communists in the US State Department…implied the involvement of at least 57 government employees…onwards to treason of the President, Secretary of State, the Democratic Party, Hollywood Movie Makers, authors, college professors, etc…

“…We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. …We will not walk in fear of one another.” - Edward R.Murrow In March 1954 major media personalities helped to further discredit McCarthy’s demagoguery.

McCarthy’s decline in power and popularity accelerated due to his nationally televised hearings that were an investigation into alleged Army improprieties connected with the Communist threat.

Today “McCarthyism” is a term used to describe actions typified by name calling, unsubstantiated claims of wrongdoing, or “witch hunting”.

Freedom of Speech is guaranteed in the First Amendment of The Bill of Rights in the US Constitution. Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances
