On December 16th, 1944 the Germans began an offensive into the Ardennes Forest along the German-Belgian border.

Because the area was so densely forested the allies chose not to defend it heavily. The German’s goal was to reach the sea, trap four allied armies, and force peace on the Western front.

Even though the German offensive achieved total surprise and was carried out in snow and sub-freezing temperatures, the Allied troops fought fiercely to avoid giving up ground.

Within three days, the determined American stand, and the arrival of powerful reinforcements from Patton’s 3 rd Army, ensured that the ambitious German goal was far beyond reach.

After the battle the Allies pushed into Germany.

On March 30th, 1944 FDR was resting in a chair while having his portrait painted. He began to complain of a headache and suddenly slumped over. Doctors found the cause of death to be a massive cerebral hemorrhage.

During his 12 years as president, FDR had been one of the most beloved in history…thousands came out to watch his funeral procession
