The Effects of Music on Blue Pansies’ Growth by Height By Wendy Dang Mr. Trentcosta Biology 1- Science Fair

Hypothesis  Does music help blue pansies’ growth increase?

Background Information  Plants can respond to music like humans and it has been scientifically proven by many scientists in the world.  It showed that plants thrive in music so the growth of the plants increases.  Studies show that classical music helps plants grow better because the soothing melody helps the plant become more “productive”.  Just like how music affects humans mentally, music affects plants physically because the wave and pressure from the sound causes the plants’ seed germination occur faster.

Materials Control Group  One blue pansies seedling  Water  Flower pot Experimental Groups  Two blue pansies seeding  Two stereos  Two CDs:  Pop  Classical  Water  Two flower pots

Procedures 1 st Step: Take the 3 blue pansies and label them – “Control Group – No Music” “Experimental Group – Pop” “Experimental Group – Classical” 2 nd Step: Put the plants in separate rooms with a lamp in each room 3 rd Step: Put the plants in the correct room – the room with a stereo for pop music, place the plant labeled “Experimental Group – Pop” in that room; the room with a stereo for classical music, place the plant labeled “Experimental Group – Classical” 4 th Step: Measure the plant by centimeters to make sure they have equal height 5 th Step: Turn lamp on, play the music, and water the plant then record the data after 3hrs of music therapy is done each day

The Experiment This is the graph of the results from the experiment. From the experiment, the blue pansies that had pop music played grew to be 33 cm. tall while the blue pansies that had classical music played grew to be 29 cm. tall, but the blue pansies that had no music played grew to be 23 cm. tall. All 3 plants began with 22cm. tall. Control – No Music : each day it grew 0.07 cm. a day Experiment 1 – Pop Music : each day it grew 0.80 cm. a day Experiment 2 – Classical Music : each day it grew 0.50 cm. a day

Conclusion  Music does increase in blue pansies’ growth especially pop music.
