R EVIVAL & R EFORMATION

Revival and Reformation This Quarter {4} In every generation, God’s Spirit strives to bring revival into the hearts of His people. Revival is an ongoing, daily experience.

Revival and Reformation This Quarter {4} Revival is all about a God of lovingkindness seeking to deepen His relationship with us. The initiative in revival is His. His Spirit creates longings within us. His Spirit convicts us of our need. His Spirit reveals Jesus’ goodness and grace.

Revival and Reformation Questions This Quarter {5} What are the conditions that God has given for the outpouring of His Spirit? Is God waiting for some magical moment to pour out His Spirit on His last-day church? What does it mean to live a Spirit- filled life?

Revival and Reformation Questions This Quarter {5} Is there anything we can do to cooperate with God in order to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit now? Where does revival and reformation begin?

1 Revival: Our Great Need 2 Prayer: The Heartbeat of Revival 3 The Word: The Foundation of Revival 4 Witness and Service: The Fruit of Revival 5 Obedience: The Fruit of Revival 6 Confession and Repentance: The Conditions of Revival 7 Unity: The Bond of Revival 8 Discernment: The Safeguard of Revival 9 Reformation: The Outgrowth of Revival 10 Reformation: The Willingness to Grow and Change 11 Reformation: Thinking New Thoughts 12 Reformation: Healing Broken Relationships 13 The Promised Revival: God’s Mission Completed Revival and Reformation Contents

Revival and Reformation Our Goal {5} “A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs.” —Selected Messages 1:121. Heaven places priority on revival. What could be more important?

Revival and Reformation Lesson 1, July 6 Revival and Reformation Lesson 1, July 6 Revival: Our Great Need

Key Text Revelation 3:20 NKJV “ ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and open the door, I will come in to him and dine with him and he with Me.’ ”

Revival: Our Great Need Initial Words {7} Laodicea’s water was piped from a spring five miles south of the city. By the time the water reached Laodicea, it was lukewarm. Jesus uses that to represent the condition of His last-day church: self-confident, complacent, apathetic, and spiritually indifferent. A church that has lost its passion and needs spiritual revival.

Revival: Our Great Need Quick Look 1. An Spiritual Re-creation (Revelation 3:14) 2. A Loving Rebuke (Revelation 3:15-17) 3. The Divine Remedy (Revelation 3:18-20)

Revival: Our Great Need 1. An Spiritual Re-creation Revelation 3:14 NKJV “ ‘And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write: “These things says the Amen, the Faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God.” ’ ”

1.An Spiritual Re-creation Hope for Lukewarm Laodiceans {8} In Revelation 3:14, the Greek word for “beginning” is arche. It can mean “beginning” in the sense that the one to whom it refers is the beginner of the action or event. In this context, arche refers to Jesus as the Beginner, or the first cause of all creation. In other words, He is the Creator.

1.An Spiritual Re-creation Hope for Lukewarm Laodiceans {8} Jesus, the One who spoke and worlds came into being, the One who created the earth, the One who spoke life into existence—this same Jesus speaks hope to Laodicea. The all-powerful creator can create new life. He can recreate new spiritual longings in our hearts. He can transform our spiritual lives.

Revival: Our Great Need 2. A Loving Rebuke Revelation 3:15-17 NKJV “ ‘I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. … I will spew you out of My mouth. Because you say, “I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing” —and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.’ ”

2. A Loving Rebuke Spiritually Indifferent {9} “The message to the Laodicean church applies most decidedly to those whose religious experience is insipid, who do not bear decided witness in favor of the truth.” EGW The SDA Bible Comm 7:962.

2. A Loving Rebuke Spiritually Indifferent {9} An insipid religious experience is one that is lifeless. It has the outer husk of Christianity but lacks the substance. It has the external form but lacks the living power. The Laodiceans are not heretics or fiery fanatics; they are simply, spiritually indifferent.

There is a gap between what Laodicea says and does. There is an even greater gap between the spiritual experience that Laodicea thinks she has and what she actually does have. One of Satan’s fatal deceptions is to blind us to the reality of our spiritual needs. 2. A Loving Rebuke Perception and Reality {10}

Revival: Our Great Need 3. The Divine Remedy Revelation 3:18-20 NKJV “ ‘Buy from Me gold…that you may be rich; and white garments…that the shame of your nakedness may not be reveled; and anoint your eyes with eye salves, that you may see. … I stand at the door and knock. If anyone…opens the door, I will come in…and dine with him….’ ”

3. The Divine Remedy From the Great Merchantman {11} “The gold…is faith and love. The white raiment…is his own robes of righteousness, and the oil for anointing is the oil of grace, which will give spiritual eyesight...that he may distinguish between the workings of the Spirit of God and the spirit of the enemy.” —The Advent Review and the Sabbath Herald Aug

3. The Divine Remedy A Relentless Love {12} Jesus knocks; He doesn’t break down the door and force His way in. In the end, regardless of what God is willing to do for us, we must make the choice to let Him in. “How resistant am I to opening the door to Him?” “Why?” What sin, what indulgence don’t you want to, or find so hard to let go of?

Revival: Our Great Need Final Words {13} “Revival signifies a renewal of spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices. … Revival and reformation…must blend.” —The Advent Review and the Sabbath Herald Feb
