Characteristics of Native American Literature living in harmony with the natural world. the social structure in tribes is typically matrilineal (from the mother’s family). Tricksters – contradictory qualities  Foolish but clever  Greedy but helpful  Unreliable but clever Archetypal Characters – character types that can be found in literature across different cultures Use of: dialogue, repetition, detailed action

Colonial Literature

Slave Narratives Portrays the culture shock of a newly captured African Focuses criticism of the slave traders, not slave owners  Focuses on the Middle Passage – journey from African to West Indies Includes religious and moral appeals against slavery Use of descriptive details  Sensory details  Descriptions of his own reactions  Anecdotes, brief stories that support his points

The personal narrative incorporates vivid descriptive details as well as the thoughts, feelings, and reactions of the writer. Has a clear purpose, the significance of which is clear to the reader – places the reader into the action Is written in first person Has many relevant sensory details Includes the author's feelings and thoughts Often includes dialogue
