10:15 a.m. January 8, 2011 A quiet Saturday morning… Popular U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords hosts a ‘Congress on Your Corner’ at a busy Safeway supermarket. Lone gunman shoots Rep. Giffords and 15 others. 4 dead at the scene.

Hour 1 – ‘Gabby’s Been Shot’ On-call Public Affairs staffer bombarded with calls and pages; heads to UMC. Media arrive at hospital. 9 patients arrive at UMC Trauma Center, 3 more transferred later. Hospital Command Center established.

First steps 1 st press briefing set for 2 p.m. in auditorium adjacent to hospital Media kept away from hospital until shortly before briefing Rumor control
