FIX_8 (High Accuracy Positioning using EGNOS and Galileo Products) Galileo SME Workshop 5 th & 6 th April 2006

Consortium  Nottingham Scientific Limited (UK SME)  Project Coordinator  Management, Prototype Design & Integration, Demonstration and Testing  Delft University of Technology (NL University)  Department of Earth Observation and Space Systems (DEOS), Faculty of Aerospace Engineering  Design & develop new precise positioning algorithm, Demonstration and Testing  Finnish Geodetic Institute  Department of Navigation and Positioning  Input Data Assembly, Demonstration and Testing

Project Rationale  Precise Point Positioning (PPP) - high accuracy & operational flexibility [single receiver]  Relies on precise satellite orbit and clock data  Freely available with latency or in real-time for a fee  Broadcast navigation messages are improving (EGNOS, Galileo, GPS Modernisation)  Is a 20-30cm PPP solution possible using EGNOS today or Galileo broadcast messages in the future?  If so, positioning accuracy can be improved by an order of magnitude with minimal changes to a standard receiver

Objectives  Prototype a new PPP solution using EGNOS and Galileo data  Examine sensitivity of solution to the accuracy of initial orbit and clock data and operating conditions  Minimise convergence time, optimise robustness (availability)  Assess performance & compare with alternatives  Provide useful integrity/reliability measures  Identify options for a future operational solution

Work Plan

Progress Status (1) Initial FIX_8 working with: IGS (final, rapid, ultra-rapid*) GSTB Navigation Messages

Progress Status (2)  Consolidation  User and system requirements  End-to-end architecture design  Extrapolation to Galileo  Implementation  Initial PPP solution implemented by TUD  Tools for data preparation developed  Enhancing end-to-end SW & integrating PPP  Next  Comprehensive testing and performance evaluation Include comparisons with alternative solutions  Optimise prototype and identify future enhancements

Expected Results (1)  Results proving feasibility of FIX_8 concept n Can PPP work with EGNOS + GPS? n Can PPP work with Galileo broadcast messages?  Comprehensive Performance Assessment n Performance with Prototype –Archived Datasets –Dedicated Field Tests  Plan for taking Prototype Forward  Extrapolation to Galileo  Possibilities for High Accuracy Galileo Commercial Service

Expected Results (2) Robust Software Prototype

Future Steps (1)  Real-time demonstration with FIX_8 in a receiver  Probably in a Software receiver initially  Apply EGNOS corrections if prototypes shows viability  Possible “live” link to Galileo Data (GSTBv2, IOV)  Add FIX_8 to simulation tools  Accuracy, Integrity, Availability, Continuity  Simulate Galileo observations

Future Steps (2)  Implement FIX_8 solution in NSL software receiver  Possible licensing of FIX_8 receiver algorithms  Possible license agreements with service providers  Suppliers of Commercial high accuracy services  Galileo concessionaire  Use FIX_8 as a software tool to investigate new methods of ionospheric and tropospheric modelling
