3 Aims of GALILEO To provide satellite navigation users and equipment providers with a broader range of services; To promote open markets and to facilitate growth in trade of global navigation goods and services; To provide a system which is fully compatible with the existing US GPS system; To reinforce the global satellite navigation infrastructure by providing an additional state-of-the-art system ensuring a more robust, precise and continuous service to civilian users worldwide; To prevent misuse of satellite navigation systems; To provide a viable alternative to existing satellite navigation systems

6 Pre-Developments Critical Technology Developments Completed GALILEO System Test Be (GSTB-V1) developed to experiment with GALILEO-like processing algorithms based on GPS observables GSTB v2 Development started July 03 The GALILEO Development preparatory phase (Phase C0) was Kicked-off in Dec 03 and concluded in Oct 04 with the GALILEO Segment PDRs

7 GALILEO Road Map Contract Signed for CDE1 with GAIN (Dec 2004) ITTs for lower level schedule critical items released Q4 2004 – e.g. GRC, IPF,… The GALILEO Development & Validation Phase (CDE1) is planned to be Kicked Off in Q1 2005 – for a planned duration of 42 months including 6 months of In Orbit Validation (phase E1) The CDE1 phase will be followed by the full deployment phase (E2) for a planned duration of 24 months
