Passing The Baton: The Future of Worship Part 2

The Future of Worship  What are the values we are passing on to the next generation about worship?

Worship is 24/7  ALL OF LIFE IS ABOUT WORSHIP! Colossians 3: Corinthians 10:31

We are created to Worship  We can’t help but pass on our values of worship to the next generation.  Worship is a response to whatever we treasure most in our lives.

Psalm 78:1-8  Things to know before jumping in: 1.Psalm 78 - a Historical Psalm 2.Psalm 78 - a Song 3.Asaph - primary influence in writing Psalm 78 4.Asaph - a Levite & musician of great renown

Psalm 78:1-8  Divided into 4 parts: 1.Plea 2.Command 3.Content of the Command 4.Reason for the Command

The Plea  78:1-3 Main Point: Incline your Hearts to God! 1.Something we must place a high emphasis on! 2.Ecclesiastes 5:1 3.James 4:8 4.Psalm 51

The Command and Content  78:4-6 Main Point: Tell the Coming Generations of the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 1.Asaph took the Command Seriously. 2.The Gospel is the strongest display of God’s deeds, might and wonders!

Last week’s questions  How seriously do we take the command to “Tell the coming generations of the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done?  Are you a “Disciple Making Disciple”?

The Content for the Command  78:4 Tell the coming generations of the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 1.The Command is God-Centered 2.Isaiah 42:8

The Content for the Command  The Message is very clear: GLORIFY GOD, ADORE GOD, NOT MAN!  Romans 11:33-36

The Reason for the Command  78:4-5 We will not hide them from their children but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children,

The Reason for the Command  78:6-7 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;

The Reason for the Command  78:8 and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

The Reason for the Command  78:4 So that they should set their hope in God 1.What is Hope? 2.What is Biblical Hope?

The Reason for the Command  What is Biblical hope? It is a confident expectation of good things to come… -John Piper …In and through God for His Glory and the Joy of the saints

The Reason for the Command  78:7 So that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, Truth 1: “Forget” is not a passive verb. Truth 2: If they never hear, they will forget.

The Reason for the Command  78:7 So that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; “We are justified by faith alone, but not by faith that is alone.” -Martin Luther

The Reason for the Command  78:8 And that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. 1.Do not hope in past generations. 2.It doesn’t mean we can’t learn from past generations! In fact we absolutely should!

The Reason for the Command  When people look at your generation what adjectives come to mind?

Steadfast and Faithful 1.Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego 2.Paul, Lois and Eunice with Timothy 3.Polycarp of Smyrna

What Baton (Legacy) of worship are you Passing on to the future generations?
